Antique vs Vintage Jewellery: What's the Difference?
You've probably seen the words vintage and antique used to describe jewellery, but what do they actually mean? Let's take a closer look at the difference, how to recognise each category and what makes these pieces so special.
At Goudvink Vintage, I spend a lot of time searching for jewellery with character. From delicate gold rings to colourful gemstones and beautifully detailed antique pieces, every treasure has something that makes it stand out.
But when browsing a collection of pre-loved jewellery, you might wonder: what's the difference between vintage and antique jewellery? Are they simply different words for old jewellery, or is there more to it?
The answer is a little more interesting than you might think. ✨
What is vintage jewellery?
Vintage jewellery generally refers to pieces that are at least around 20 years old, but not yet old enough to be considered antique. The exact definition can vary, and the word is sometimes used more broadly in the jewellery world.
What I love about vintage jewellery is the variety. Depending on the period, you might find unusual gemstone combinations, unexpected shapes or details that you don't often see in contemporary designs.
Vintage doesn't necessarily mean delicate or traditional, either. Some pieces are bold and playful, while others are timeless and understated. There's a little something for every style.
What is antique jewellery?
Antique jewellery is generally considered to be at least 100 years old. That means a piece made in the 1920s, for example, may now qualify as antique, while a piece from the 1950s would usually be described as vintage.
Antique jewellery offers a glimpse into the past. Its designs can tell us something about the fashions, materials and techniques of the time, from intricate Victorian goldwork to the elegant, delicate details associated with the Edwardian era.
You might come across hand engraving, old-cut diamonds, distinctive gemstone settings or hallmarks that offer clues about a piece's age and origin.
Of course, age alone doesn't tell the whole story. The condition, craftsmanship and history of a piece all contribute to its character. And because these treasures have often been worn and loved for generations, small signs of wear can be part of what makes them so special.
The main differences at a glance
Although the terms are sometimes used loosely, the simplest way to distinguish between vintage and antique jewellery is by age.
-
Vintage jewellery: generally around 20–99 years old.
-
Antique jewellery: generally 100 years old or older.
The style can offer useful clues, too. Certain cuts of diamonds, setting techniques, hallmarks and design details are associated with particular periods. However, these clues need to be considered together: a design may be inspired by an earlier era, and a hallmark can help with dating without necessarily telling the entire story.
That's why identifying a piece isn't always as straightforward as looking at it. Sometimes, a little research is needed to uncover its history.
Giving old treasures a new chapter
Whether a piece is vintage or antique, what matters most is the story it can continue to tell.
These are pieces that have lasted through changing fashions and generations, and now they have the chance to become part of someone else's life. They might be worn every day, saved for special occasions or eventually passed on to someone else.
That's the beauty of choosing jewellery with a past: you're not simply finding something beautiful to wear. You're giving a piece of history a new chapter.
And who knows? The ring you fall in love with today might be someone else's treasured heirloom a hundred years from now 🕊️💍
