The DEAREST ring: a little secret hidden in gemstones 💍✨

Some pieces of jewellery are beautiful at first sight. Others have a little secret that makes you fall in love with them even more. The DEAREST ring is one of those pieces, and one of my personal favourites to look for when sourcing vintage jewellery.

There are certain pieces I’m always keeping an eye out for when I’m sourcing vintage and antique jewellery. The DEAREST ring is definitely one of them. It combines beautiful gemstones, a touch of history and a hidden meaning that makes this design feel extra special.

What is a DEAREST ring?

The DEAREST ring is a sentimental style of jewellery in which the gemstones spell out the word DEAREST. Each letter represents the first letter of a gemstone:

• D — Diamond

• E — Emerald

• A — Amethyst

• R — Ruby

• E — Emerald

• S — Sapphire

• T — Topaz

Set together, these seven gemstones create a colourful ring with a secret message hidden in plain sight. What might look like a beautiful combination of gemstones at first glance is actually a little expression of affection.

The idea belongs to a tradition of sentimental jewellery in which gemstones were used to communicate messages and feelings. It was especially popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras, when jewellery could carry private meanings that weren't always obvious to anyone looking at it.

A little message of affection

The word dearest is such a lovely sentiment in itself. It can be a term of endearment for someone you love, a partner, a dear friend or another person who holds a special place in your heart.

That's what makes this ring so charming to me. Its meaning is woven into the gemstones themselves, rather than written out in words. It's romantic without being too obvious, and personal without needing an explanation.

I also love the thought that a ring like this may once have been given as a gift, carrying a message between two people. We may never know its original story, but the sentiment behind the design has the potential to live on.
